Aranmanai 4: A Familiar Haunt with Mixed Results

Sundar C’s Aranmanai franchise returns for a fourth installment, promising another round of chills and thrills in a palatial setting. “Aranmanai 4” delivers on the familiar formula – a haunted palace, a vengeful spirit, and a dash of humor – but the execution leaves something to be desired.

The story revolves around a man, played adequately by Santhosh Prathap, who investigates his sister’s mysterious death that seems connected to the sprawling ancestral palace. Tamannaah and Raashi Khanna provide capable performances as the female leads, caught amidst the supernatural chaos.

The film’s strengths lie in its adherence to the crowd-pleasing formula. There are jump scares aplenty, though some rely on less-than-impressive CGI. The comedy, courtesy of Yogi Babu, Kovai Sarala, and VTV Ganesh, is a mixed bag. While some gags land, others fall flat, and Kovai Sarala’s brand of humor might grate on some viewers.

However, “Aranmanai 4” stumbles in its originality. The plot feels derivative, borrowing heavily from previous installments. The predictability lessens the scares, and the humor relies on familiar tropes.

For die-hard fans of the franchise, “Aranmanai 4” might offer a mildly entertaining return to the haunted palace. But for newcomers or those seeking a fresh horror-comedy experience, this film treads well-worn territory. It’s a safe, predictable watch, but one that fails to innovate or surprise.

Verdict: A lukewarm sequel that delivers more of the same. Watch it if you’re a fan of the franchise, but skip it if you’re looking for something new.
